Relics and Reality- Part 7

You can read the older parts at these links:

The bright light through the shadowed window woke me up in a burst. My cheeks were smudged in a weird substance which I realized was tears. I did not know I had dozed off in the arm chair, and then it came back. The whole flashback- the events and the feelings of the past night. I looked around for the broken cup, the crushed ladder, or the gaping hole of the attic. But there was nothing, no telltale evidence of the events. My eyes caught something on the dining table, and it was a book- old, yellowed, worn out, used. I flipped through the pages, to read the tale again, and at a glance, I fell down on the bed- laughing uncontrollably. Tears dripped from my eyes, and I swore as I slipped down the bed onto the floor- the book was empty!

The book lay on the bed, open to the center page, where a red mark shone- in a color similar to blood. It was a name, Haseena Begun Rahul Tripathy, which I missed.

The same day in the local newspaper, a small column talked about the death of a woman’s death 77 years ago. The woman, named Haseena, had been found dead under unforeseen circumstances, and it was suspected that it had been the first of many killings due to the reasons of dowry and religion.

My eyes glanced at the article, and all I did was to sigh in sympathy for the poor girl. There was no sign of recognition in my eyes, nor did my heart feel the pain like the night before. A breeze blew past, with a resemblance to a fleeting smile.

Din mein se ho gayi raat,
Par ab tak khatam nahi hui hai hamari baat,
Sach ki hoke rahegi aaj jeet,
Kyunki aaj ho gaye saal saat-saat.

PS: This is my first try at writing a series of stories. So please do put in your comments.
