Should Terrorists Be Negotiatied With??

It is true that the human race is at the peak of its success and development. As days pass, the human race continues its progress at a faster rate. But, at the same time, there has also been the presence of regressive and dishonorable activities in this same world. Dark deeds flood this world, and the newspapers are infested with news about murders, rape and terrorism. But the most recent and most dangerous form of crime which has come up on a global scale is terrorism. From the heists of the Somali pirates, to the gruesome bombings by the more organized terrorist groups of al-Qaeda; these crimes have taken a step forward into the world. They work to frighten, threaten and endanger the world. But, is it we who encourage these activities? Do these practices take place due to our nature of letting sleeping dogs lie? Do these happen because governments talk their way out of such situations and the terrorists wants are heard globally?

Yes. This is what I feel is happening. Some issues take place because people want fame, and they want their name to be heard worldwide; they want to leave their mark on the world. And they achieve this by talking about their requests with the host government. Thus, I feel that governments should reduce negotiations with terrorists to great extent in order to cut down on these horrendous incidents.

Some acts of terrorism are done in order to proclaim the wants of people; while some are done to avenge injustice. Some are done to leave a mark on the worldwide populace; while some are done without any concrete motive. Avenging injustice is the job of the judicial system, and no one can overrule their verdict. Any act which disobeys this system should not be subject to the normal rights followed by society as this unlawful deed may pose a giant threat to society. Also, leaving a mark on society through the violent endeavor of terrorism is unjust and should not be tolerated.

If governments resort to negotiations to deal with terrorists, these unlawful deeds will keep cropping up on the global scale as this will appear as an attractive avenue to pose demands to huge governing bodies. The demands which are usually presented comprise of huge amounts of cash or may even involve the release of war criminals! Earning these sums of money takes a lot of time and energy and so does the latter demand, thus there should not be any option for making the decision. The answer is sure to be a no. Then why do governments talk and negotiate with terrorists?  Why are these situations worsened for the hostages or the civilians involved? If the terrorists are subject to a no-win situation in the first place, then why do governments increase the trauma and risk the lives of precious civilians? This act is more unethical, and thus is proclaim that negotiations should not be entertained.

Acts of terrorism usually involve violent methods like killing and holding people hostage. Any action which involves a threat to a person or group of persons is termed to be a crime. Terrorism is one of the most grotesque crimes as it involves the above actions on a larger scale. The average sentence to a murderer is the death penalty; then a person who murders a large number of people at the same time should be subjected to a more intense punishment. Why should their demands be heard at all? Not punishing a wrong-doer is a larger crime in society, then why do governments waste time and stall terrorists by negotiating with them? I feel this should be changed as soon as possible, as terrorism threatens to pose a larger threat as time passes.

The issue which comes up to support the other side is the human rights factor. No person or even government can be allowed to cause harm to another person, thus terrorists are object to the rights of the host country. Thus negotiations have to take place in order to follow the law and to provide justice. But do the terrorists follow these laws? The simple answer is a no. As the terrorists themselves do not follow the laws and rights and work to harm people, then why should they be put forward to the laws? I suggest a just method is to avoid negotiations, and to subject terrorists to their own evil ways.
Stalling terrorists by useless negotiations is a worthless task in my opinion and I feel terrorists are not reasonable people who can or should be negotiated with. This action just works to increase the trauma on the victims and increases the chance of civilians being killed. But, negotiations are practiced all throughout the world and countries promote negotiation teams as well. This is just my opinion and it can differ from person to person.

After all the lives lost, not bringing the culprits to the gallows seems like so much time lost too. I get that. However, the terror networks are so thick around the globe, reaching the roots/core can only be done by talking to the terrorists. If we hang them, they are victorious in their martyrdom for whatever cause they will killing for. But if we negotiate, we leave room open for hearing them out, understanding what they want, and getting to those still hiding. In the process, maybe converting a few terrorist hearts into civilians. Maybe!

    1. Even if a terrorist is captured, the chances of getting concrete evidence is minimal. These people are just trained, and after that, they do not know a single thing.
And talking about converting, these people are brainwashed so badly in the name of religion that the only thing they remember is to spill the blood of their enemies.
And just a tiny question, if some relative is stuck in such a situation, would we want the government to hold back and keep negotiating with the wrong doers, or would we just want our relative back ASAP? I'd say we would all want the latter...

  2. True Karan. Everyone should have a non-negotiation policy in place to deal with terrorists. Simple elimination without second thought is the best chance to attempt to wipe out what can only be described as a blot on human society.

  3. Hmm... The roots of terrorism need to be understood Karan. I value your thoughts to somehow bring an end to terrorism. I am with you on the objective.

But as you rightly moved the topic towards pointing the fingers on ourselves, it's we the society who give place to terrorism. It is nothing but the collective expression of extremist thoughts of a society. Such extremism could be on anything from a religion to a language.

Well, everyone should be given a chance to express what they expect. Democratic is a name we call it, but it is just a freedom to express. If the majority of the world accepts such demands, then there is no problem.

But world never supported any extremist thoughts and the group of extremists still want the majority to accept it. So they are called as terrorists.

We must send a strong message that we as humans never accept extremism in any form and cannot tolerate anyone kill innocents in any namesake. Moment the silent extremists among us stops supporting the terrorism, terrorism will start to fail.

Thanks for such a concerning post Karan. Peace and Love.
